Spring 2015 Study Abroad Experience: Cuenca, Ecuador & Mendoza, Argentina
During the spring semester of my junior year at Dickinson (spring 2015), I had the opportunity to travel abroad to South America in order to immerse myself in Latin American culture and to continue my study of the Spanish language. I lived abroad for six months with a Spanish-speaking host family and was able to learn about la cosomovisión andina and the culture of both respective countries from local community members and professors.
This experience not only improved my mastery of the Spanish language but also provided a great opportunity to exchange ideas, cultures and perspectives with Argentine and Ecuadorian students. Interacting with students within and beyond the classroom in Ecuador and at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (Argentina) helped me to gain insight into these two distinct countries in a new and intimate way.
Durante el semestre de primavera de mi tercer año en Dickinson (primavera 2015), tuve la oportunidad de trabajar a Sudamérica para imersarme en la cultura latinoamericana y para seguir mi estudio del idioma español. Vivà afuera por seis meses con una familia anfitriona y aprendà sobre la cosmovisión andina y la cultura de ambos paÃses de miembros de la comunidad y de profesores.
Esta experiencia no solo mejoró mi maestrÃa del idioma español sino también me proveyó con la oportunidad de intercambiar ideas, culturas y perspectivas con estudiantes argentinos y ecuatorianos. Interactuando con estudiantes adentro y afuera de la sala de clase en Ecuador y en la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (en Argentina) me ayudó a entender estos paÃses distintos de una manera nueva y más profunda.

Studying Spanish at Dickinson College

As a Spanish major at Dickinson College I developed an advanced mastery of the Spanish language. I not only learned how to write analytic essays about various works of literature and other legal texts, but I also had many opportunities to take my knowledge and my Spanish-speaking ability outside of the classroom. For example, I served as a medical interpreter for a local health clinic where I translated the conversation between a Spanish-speaking patient and an English-speaking doctor throughout the patient's medical examination. These duties required working knowledge of medical terminology in both Spanish and English.

Durante mi carerra en el departamento de Español en Dickinson College, desarrollaba mi dominio del idioma español. No solo aprendà cómo escribir ensayos analÃticos sobre varias obras de literatura y otros textos legales sino también tuve varias oportunidades para llevar mi conocimiento y mis habilidades afuera de la sala de clase. Por ejemplo, trabajé como un interpreté médico para una clÃnica de salud donde interpretaba la conversación entre un paciente hispanohablante y un médico estadounidense que habló inglés por toda la examinación médica. Estos deberes requerÃan un conocimiento de la terminologÃa médica en Español y en inglés.
