Dickinson College Farm

SEED Student Program Coordinator
Sustainable Earth Education Program at the Dickinson College Farm

The Dickinson College Farm Sustainable Earth Education Program is a series of educational workshops for children held during the fall and spring semesters of Dickinson's academic year. Through fun, hands-on activities children explore a sustainable farm and learn how nourishing food moves from seed to soil to table.

As the student coordinator for Fall 2013 and during the 2014-2015 academic year I developed, organized and facilitated these educational workshops. I created a marketing scheme and poster, advertised the program to the Carlisle community and wider region, enlisted and trained volunteers to assist with classes, planned each class and facilitated the class.

Work and Internship Experiences

Positions held during my time at Dickinson College.

Norman M. Eberly Writing Center

Water Quality Intern
Presque Isle State Park, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Summer Internship

My primary duty as a water quality intern was to collect and analyze water samples from the nine swimming beaches at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania. During the sampling routine, I served as a resource to the public and was expected to answer questions about the sampling procedure and any posted swimming advisories or restrictions. Following sampling, I plated and processed the water samples at the Erie County Health Department, communicated results to park managers and was responsible for posting any swimming advisories.

Other secondary duties included beach clean-up, shorebird monitoring, and invasive plant species management (both manually and with herbicide).

English and Spanish Peer Tutor/ First Year Seminar Writing Associate
Norman M. Eberly Multilingual Writing Center at Dickinson College

The goal of the Norman M. Eberly Writing Center at Dickinson College is to help college students understand the goals of academic writing across the disciplines.

As a peer tutor in both the English center and the Multilingual Writing Center, I assisted my peers with their writing at all stages of the writing process. My duties included explaining proper college writing techniques to students, explaining grammar rules and sentence structure, assisting students with the revision and editing of written work, and communicating student progress to professors.

Once a week I was also responsible for managing the front desk of the writing center. This included answering the phone, making student appointments and acting as the writing center receptionist.

As a writing associate, I worked with a different First Year Seminar class each year. I served as a writing resource for both the students of the class and for the professor. My duties included meeting with the professor of the course and collaboratively developing writing assignments for first year students, working individually with students to improve their writing and introducing students to the college writing center. I also facilitated peer review and taught in-class lessons on different writing conventions throughout the semester.

Student Farmer
Dickinson College Farm

The Dickinson College Farm is a 50-acre USDA certified organic farm that acts as a living laboratory for Dickinson students and is also a fully functional farm that provides produce and beef to the college dining hall and to local community members via a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

As a student farmer, I assisted with all farm tasks. These tasks varied during different seasons. Some typical duties on the farm included preparing fields and greenhouses for planting, harvesting and washing crops and assisting with the maintenance and care of the livestock (chickens, sheep and cows). Other duties included coordinating student volunteers, transporting college compost to the farm and helping set up the Community Supported Agriculture pick-up.

I also had the opportunity to attend the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture Conference (2013 and 2015), FarmAid (2013) and participate in a charity event titled "Art on the Farm" (2013 and 2014) during my time as a student farmer.
